Synthesizing Knowledge:
Working Group 3’s Strategic Review Initiative
As we conclude our series on the pivotal outcomes of the EUFLYNET meeting in Jastarnia, we spotlight the ambitious efforts of Working Group 3. This group has resolved to conduct a comprehensive systematic review, focusing on the published literature concerning the ecology and conservation of migratory birds within the Afro-Palearctic migratory flyway.
This initiative aims to thoroughly analyze the existing research landscape, identifying both the strengths and the critical gaps that will guide our future conservation strategies. Here’s a closer look at the sophisticated methodology and the expected impacts of Working Group 3’s work.
Working Group 3 reached a consensus to undertake a systematic review of articles published in Web of Science centred on focal aspects regarding the ecology and conservation of migratory birds within the Afro-Palearctic migratory flyway. Focal aspects will include, for example, timing of migration and geographies used during the annual cycle. The aims are to delve into the spatiotemporal distribution and taxonomic coverage of research on each aspect, along with a characterization of methodologies used to examine these. Anticipated outcomes include the identification of research gaps (a mandatory EUFLYNET deliverable) and citation networks, with pilot results being used to partially inform the selection of species for subsequent Species Action Plans. Additionally, the research gap analysis will serve as a valuable reference database for future studies, potentially resulting in standalone publications and facilitating follow-up meta-analyses.
